This event is best suited to individuals who:

  • Aspire to coach within football;
  • Currently coach at any level of the game;
  • Want to learn how to create and develop football clubs;
  • Want to learn how to access coaching courses (guests offered a discount rate);
  • Want to listen and converse with experienced coaches such as FA coach mentors;
  • Aim to network with football’s key stakeholders and other grassroots personnel;
  • Aspire to develop a professional career within football.

Following on from its successful launch at Valley Parade last year, and its follow-up event at Elland Road, the John Smith's Stadium is the next destination for the Creating and Developing Coaches initiative.

The networking event aims to provide a platform for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) coaches, or personnel working with under-represented groups, to form relationships with football’s key stakeholders in the West Yorkshire region.

Creating and Developing Coaches, formed and developed by Leeds Beckett University in partnership with the West Riding County FA, aims to provide a space where under-represented groups can highlight barriers, put forward aims and aspirations, learn of development opportunities, and forge relationships with key individuals and organisations.

This event targets both aspiring and current coaches who wish to either break into the game, or further develop their skills, knowledge and contacts.

Attendees of previous Creating and Developing Coaches have benefited from securing links with local professional clubs, while other participants have taken advantage of coaching qualification courses offered at discount rates.

Creating and Developing Coaches is proud to work in partnership with experienced football coaches who work in the professional and grassroots game as well as influential organisations such as County FA’s, Black and Asian Coaches Association (BACA), Sporting Equals, and Kick It Out. Our partners aim to offer their guidance, help and support for the attending coaches.

Although this free event is open for all to attend, Creating and Developing Coaches is specifically tailored to understand and meet the aspirations of football’s under-represented communities.

At present, there are only two black managers in English football out of the 92 professional clubs. And, according to Sporting Equals, only 4.1 percent of senior football coaches employed during the 2016-17 season were BAME, a slight decrease on the previous campaign. Considering that BAME groups represent over a quarter of professional players, it is evident that BAME coaches are marginalised in the professional game.

At professional level, the Rooney Rule and the COACH programme have been introduced to address this issue. But, at grassroots level, action has been slow. Therefore, Creating and Developing Coaches attempts to challenge the under-representation of BAME groups within grassroots and create the next generation of coaches, thus allowing players the opportunity to play.
