Referee Progression Pathway - Season 2026/27

Are you considering taking the next step in your refereeing career?

Applications for the first promotion intake of the 2026/27 season are now open, with a deadline of midday on Tuesday 30th June.

The Progression Pathway provides referees with a fantastic opportunity to:

  • Progress through the refereeing ladder
  • Gain experience officiating at different levels of football
  • Receive developmental feedback from dedicated observers and matchday coaches


Promotion applications are reviewed quarterly:

  • Quarter 1: 1 August – 31 October
  • Quarter 2: 1 November – 31 December
  • Quarter 3: 1 January – 28 February
  • Quarter 4: 1 March – 30 April


To join the pathway, you must:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Be actively refereeing adult football


Please note that referees must achieve promotion within two years (eight quarters) of joining the pathway. Those who do not achieve promotion within this timeframe will be removed from the programme.

If you miss this deadline to sign up or change your mind, please do not worry as applications will reopen at the beginning of November for Quarter 2.
