FA REFEREES’ COURSE INFORMATION
Overview
The FA Referees’ Course provides an introduction to officiating 11v11 and 9v9 football. The course will introduce learners to The Laws of Association Football and their application, delivered through theory and practical elements and focussing on the knowledge, skills and attributes required to operate safely and effectively in grass roots football.
Course Structure
Unit 1: Pre-course learning (2 hours)
Unit 2: On-course theory and practical (7 hours)
Unit 3: On-course theory and practical (3 hours)
Unit 4: On-course theory and practical (7 hours)
Unit 5: Referee five matches
Unit 6: On-course final assessment (2 hours)
Course Content
Through a mixture of theory and practical activity, learners will cover:
- Effective communication
- Positioning and movement
- Penalty kick and free kick management
- Managing re-starts
- Advantage
- Managing players
- Recognising and dealing with foul challenges
- Cautioning and sending-off procedure
- Offside
- Dealing with substitutions
- Dealing with injuries
Minimum Age
Learners must be 14 or over on the course start date.
Safeguarding Requirements
Before refereeing their five matches (unit 5), leaners must have complied with the FA’s safeguarding requirements.
Qualification
Upon successful completion of units 1-6, learners will be classified as either a Level Y referee (if aged 14 or 15) or a Level 7 referee (if aged 16 or over). The FA refereeing qualification is awarded only when all 6 units have been successfully completed.

The Evaluations for this course will be conducted at the Southampton Academy. Time and dates of this will be announced after the fixtures for December and January are released.

Fresh and pioneering new approach to the training of new referees, with it being primarily focused on the practical training and learning of the skills required to referee a 9 v 9 or 11 v 11 football match.
The learning of the practical elements of refereeing re: their application and understanding are facilitated on the course by FA Referee Tutors, with the Learner taking a greater responsibility to learn the Laws of the Game through distance learning prior to, during and after the practical sessions of the course.
This new and enhanced approach to training new football referees will, without doubt, better prepare the Learner for the role as a referee.
Are there any age limits?
Anyone aged 14 or over can become a referee. There is no upper-age limit but Learners need to be fully able to participate in practical sessions. Until you reach the age of 16, you will only be able to referee games involving children at least 1 year younger than yourself.
Will I need to undertake FA Safeguarding Children Training?
All referees have to undertake FA Safeguarding Children training before they will be able to register with the FA as a Referee. You should attempt to complete this before undertaking training as a Referee; however this can be completed during the course and certification will last 3 years. The cost of this is included in the course fee.
Will I need to undertake FA CRC (formerly CRB) check?
All referees aged 16 years or over who wish to officiate in youth football must undertake an FA Criminal Records Check. This is a simple online process which can be completed prior to the commencement of the course. Certification last for 3 years. The cost is included in the course fee.

Full instructions will be sent to you once you have enrolled onto the course nearer the date of the first session.
Cost Of the Course
The cost of the course is £130.00, which includes any safeguarding courses and CRC applications, as well as the first year's referee registration.

Hampshire FA Terms and Conditions
I am fully aware that my chosen course may be one which includes the FA Safeguarding
children workshop three hour Workshop, which discusses some sensitive ‘hypothetical’
issues and some real issues regarding child abuse in its various forms.
I am fully aware I am the only participant who can attend the FA Safeguarding Children
Workshop, I understand that no other person may attend in my place should I be unable
to attend.
I am fully aware of the previously stated mandatory prerequisites to complete the course.
If I do not deliver payment for my course fee before the commencement of the course,
my certificate will be withheld until payment is settled.
Cancellation: If I cancel my booking I will inform Hampshire FA and will be entitled to
a credit note for the value of the following:
75% return if 2 months notice given
50% return if 1 month notice given
25% return if less than one month given
No return if less than 7 days given
I understand that if I am required to transfer course a £30 administration fee may be incurred, a newly transferred course must be completed within 12 months of the original start date failure to do so will result in both the original course cost and administration fee being retained by Hampshire FA.
I will respect the course tutor, course venue and the other candidates and their points of view and I understand that if my behaviour, language or conduct is deemed ‘unacceptable’, ’offensive’or ‘harmful’ for any reason, the Hampshire FA and the venues reserves the right to exclude me from continuing on my chosen course and if necessary, future courses.
Hampshire FA does not accept responsibility for the loss, or damage to, candidate property or for personal injury however caused and that I will ensure that I am protected with my own personal insurance cover.
