Course Description

Aimed at Counties with a high ethnic minority or emerging community populations, this workshop has been designed to assist you to develop an understanding of the needs of various minority groups and how best to plan football activities to be inclusive in administration, coaching, refereeing or playing opportunities. It covers consultation, developing better links with ethnic minority groups as well as, developing a better understanding of the cultural and religious differences that have an impact on someone’s involvement in football. It also covers legislation, best practice and some practical actions to take to promote football within diverse communities.

Course Aims and Objectives

  • Recognition  of good practice in relation to Race Equality and football in clubs and organisations
  • Recognition of the implications of the Race Relations Act in relation to grassroots football
  • Insight in to the barriers preventing ethnic minorities being fully involved in grassroots football
  • Guidance on the appropriate language associated with Race Equality
  • Recognition of and valuing the differences and similarities between cultures, faiths and ethnic groups and the impact of these on football
  • Recognition of the importance of consultation with ethnic minorities
  • Recognition of poor practice in Race Equality and ways to assertively challenge this

Course Content (Theory & Practical Assessment)

  • Recognise the background to and benefits of involving people from different ethnic backgrounds and faiths in football
  • Recognise how personal experiences influence attitudes towards and from different cultural groups and how common interest in football can help break down barriers
  • Recognise key milestones in the history of immigration and the contributions ethnic minorities make to modern England
  • Evaluate the reality and perceptions of modern England
  • Identify how similarities and differences between religions and faiths can impact on someone’s involvement in football
  • Recognise how the use of cultural stereotypes can disadvantage different ethnic groups
  • State different types of discrimination and how to challenge and report it
  • Identify strengths as well as areas for improvement for race equality in a club or organisation
  • Identify action points for an individual, club or organisation.
