Every sportsperson at every level should be able to participate in activity in a safe environment with the reassurance that their medical interests have not been overlooked. The FA Medical Department strongly recommend that whenever sports activity is taking place, a first aider who has completed an appropriate first aid course is in attendance.

Successful Completion

The FA Basic Sports First Aid course requires that candidates understand the principles, practice and ethics of first aid. To be eligible for assessment and certification students must have completed all elements of the course (9 hours).

A mixed format assessment of underpinning knowledge and understanding covering the course content will apply for the qualification. Multi-choice questionnaire (MCQ) and Viva Voce papers will be supplied to the course tutor, and will be selected at random for student evaluation. The assessment will be conducted by the course tutor.

The assessment will be:

a) 20 question multi-choice questionnaire; candidates are required to achieve a minimum pass mark of 75% (15/20).

b) 5 minute Viva Voce (oral questioning). The Viva Voce will relate to the student’s knowledge and understanding of the course content; the scenario will be either (i) the recognition and response to an illness, or (ii) the recognition and response to an injury.

Students who successfully complete both assessed elements will be awarded The FA Basic Sports First Aid qualification.

Currency of Qualification

Due to the nature and responsibility associated with first aid provision, and in line with current UK guidelines, the currency of this certificate for use as a first aid qualification will be limited to three years. To remain qualified and ‘in date’ beyond the initial three-year period, the holder must attend and pass a further FA Basic Sports First Aid course within the final three months prior to expiry of the qualification and in the subsequent three year periods thereafter.
