Windrush 70th Anniversary Event - U8 Festival
SUFFOLK FA are to take part in the Windrush 70th anniversary celebrations in Ipswich next month.
The event is taking place at Bourne Vale Sports & Social Club in Ipswich on Sunday, August 26th 2018, from 12 noon until 6pm.
The Windrush commemorates when Caribbean men and women migrated to Britain after the Second World War on the ship named ‘Empire Windrush’, while many Caribbean countries were still under British rule.
The event will celebrate diversity by promoting Black achievement in Ipswich and Suffolk and to work collaboratively with other organisations to widen access and participation for all.
Suffolk FA were invited to attend by Ian Brown, who is on the organising committee, to put on some football for the local community.
An Under-7 Festival and an Under-8 Festival are being organised by Suffolk FA as well as a Female ‘Windrush 5s’, a mixed turn up & play session and Walking Football (Just Play Session).
There will be loads of different activities taking place on the day with Caribbean food stalls and musical performers which include Irie J and Ipswich Reggae Choir.
There will also be spoken word poetry from Angelle and a keynote speech from guest of honour Arthur Torrington.
Suffolk FA Mini & Youth Soccer Football Development Officer James Morley said: “We are really looking forward to being part of this event and supporting the 70th anniversary of the Windrush, by bringing people young and old together from all different backgrounds through football.”
