Refereeing Disability Football Workshop
Course Information:
Minimum Age: 16
Course Duration: 4 hours
Course Prerequisites: Minimum Level 7 Referee and in date FA DBS (criminal record check)
Who is it for: Qualified referees who are interested in refereeing disability football across all age groups
Course aims and objectives: The workshop is intended to help learners acquire the skills and knowledge needed to be able to referee both youth and adult disability football safely and effectively. Specifically, the learners will:
- Understand the skills and attributes of an effective referee of disabled players
- Know what constitutes appropriate terminology when speaking to or about disabled players
- Be aware of welfare considerations when refereeing disabled players
- Know what the disability football landscape ‘looks like’
Course Content:
There is a mixture of theory and practical activity. Learners will a) receive an overview of the disability football landscape, both nationally and locally, b) explore the key skills and attributes desired of an effective referee of disability football c) discuss the importance of effective communication, d) consider what is (and is not) appropriate terminology and e) talk through welfare considerations when refereeing disabled players. Learners will also have the opportunity to referee some disability football.
