FA REFEREES’ COURSE INFORMATION
Overview
The FA Referees’ Course provides an introduction to officiating 11v11 and 9v9 football. The course will introduce learners to The Laws of Association Football and their application, delivered through theory and practical elements and focussing on the knowledge, skills and attributes required to operate safely and effectively in grass roots football.
Course Structure
Unit 1: Pre-course learning (2 hours)
Unit 2: On-course theory and practical (7 hours)
Unit 3: On-course theory and practical (3 hours)
Unit 4: On-course theory and practical (7 hours)
Unit 5: Referee five matches
Unit 6: On-course final assessment (2 hours)
Course Content
Through a mixture of theory and practical activity, learners will cover:
- Effective communication
- Positioning and movement
- Penalty kick and free kick management
- Managing re-starts
- Advantage
- Managing players
- Recognising and dealing with foul challenges
- Cautioning and sending-off procedure
- Offside
- Dealing with substitutions
- Dealing with injuries
Minimum Age
Learners must be 14 or over on the course start date.
Safeguarding Requirements
Before refereeing their five matches (unit 5), leaners must have complied with the FA’s safeguarding requirements.
Qualification
Upon successful completion of units 1-6, learners will be classified as either a Level Y referee (if aged 14 or 15) or a Level 7 referee (if aged 16 or over). The FA refereeing qualification is awarded only when all 6 units have been successfully completed.

ALL candidates aged 16 or above as of 01 August 2015 will also have to attend an FA Safeguarding Children Workshop. This will take place as follows:

Please note that the FA Safeguarding Children Workshop is a requisite to obtain this qualification for all candidates over the age of 16. Candidates that have not completed this specific workshop or renewed it online within the last 3 years will be required to attend the workshop (this fee is included within the course fee). The workshop date and venue is TBC. You will have to register separately for this workshop.
All candidates aged 16 and over must also complete a Criminal Records Check (CRC). Please remember that in order for your documents to be verified, you MUST bring your the exact ID documents with you to the first day of your course that you registered online. Please note that certain forms of ID have an expiry date and if selecting a Birth Certificate, there are 2 choices.
All candidates aged 14 or 15 will be required to complete an online Safeguarding Children qualification and we will release details of how to do this in the coming days. This must be completed prior to the start of your course. You must bring a print out of your certificate, which you can download when you complete the online course and bring it with you on the first day of the course. You can also e-mail Steve Bratt a copy if you so wish.
As part of The FA Referee Course, you will be required to undertake a small amount of pre-course learning and this will be sent to all candidates in the coming days. It should be completed and brought with you on the first day of the course. Alternatively, you can scan and e-mail it back to Steve Bratt if you so wish.When we send this information, we will also send you a copy of the FIFA Laws of the Game, again the emphasis is on you to read and take in the theory behind the laws you will put into practice on your course.
As detailed previously, please note to the following information:
- Places for all courses will be allocated on a strictly first come, first served basis.
- 100% complete attendance is required on any LRCFA referee courses. Should you fail to achieve 100% attendance on every part of the course you will be deemed to have failed and you will not be qualified. In such an instance strictly no refunds will be offered and such you wish to pursue your course, you will have to re-register onto a future course and pay full price.
The only exception to attending The FA Safeguarding Children Workshop or having a CRC Verification for candidates aged 16 or above as of 01 August 2016 will be those individuals who already have a FAN number and have the necessary accreditation. In such circumstances, you must register to attend one of the two Introduction Events using your current FAN number.
KIT AND EQUIPMENT:
It is important in refereeing to have the right equipment and this course is no exception. What follows is a list of kit/equipment required for participation in the course:
- Boots
- Trainers
- Towel
- Change of clothing
- Sunscreen
- Wet and Dry weather Clothes
It is also important to remember to bring your own food and refreshments as they will not be provided on the day.
Terms and Conditions of Booking a course
Leicestershire & Rutland County FA does not accept any responsibility for the loss, or damage to, candidate property or for personal injury however caused. If you are suspended from football (by any County FA) then you are suspended from all football activity including courses.
Should you miss any session(s) of any course you sign up to the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA reserve the right to remove you from the course, and no refund will be given. However in exceptional circumstances candidates may be offered the opportunity to attend missed session(s) on other courses should availability allow, and the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA will charge you accordingly.
You will respect the course tutor, course venue and other candidates and their points of view and you will understand that if your behaviour, language or conduct is deemed ‘unacceptable’ ‘offensive’ or ‘harmful’ for any reason, the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA and the venues reserves the right to exclude you from continuing on your chosen course and if necessary, future courses.
Cancellation Policy
Please note that any payment made is non-refundable. Leicestershire & Rutland County FA adheres to a strict cancellation policy. For all course cancellations candidates will receive credit notes for use on Leicestershire & Rutland County FA courses only to the sum of:
• 75% of course cost returned if 2 months notice given
• 50% of course cost returned if 1 month notice given
• 25% of course cost returned if less than 1 month notice given
• No credit note if less than 7 days notice given
Consideration will be given to candidates who, for health reasons are unable to attend and require a transfer to another course. A letter from a doctor or medical professional must be supplied.
Transfer Policy
Should you wish you application to be transferred from one course to another (of the same type and value) then an additional £20 administration fee will be charged for all courses and workshops.
Refund Policy
Should a course that you have registered on be cancelled or postponed by the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA then a full refund will be issued. Should you cancel your registration and request a refund, then all cancellations must adhere to the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA cancellation policy please see above statement
