The Future of Youth Football
The FA has recently been looking at ways to improve young people's experience of football, raise standards, and essentially, produce better players using a child-centred and developmental approach.
The study has been conducted by Nick Levett, FA National Development Manager for Youth and Mini-Soccer, and Les Howie, Head of Grassroots Football.
The story so far:
- Nick has conducted 16 Consultations Evenings up and down the country. These started back in May 2011 and concluded in September 2011.
- Reports and findings collected and put in a presentation to the FA National Game Board towards the end of 2011 with a final decision to be made in April 2012.
- Final decisions to be made which will cover the main areas –
- New Player Pathway – This will outline when players play Mini-soccer, 9 v 9 and 11 v 11 as per the consultations.
- New Competition Strategy – Flexibility and ideas around the 3 phases – Coaching / Festivals / League (Round Robin formats)
- New Intervention Programme for Relative Age Effect – Changing the registration of players to calendar year.
In light of these changes and approval by the National Game Board, Leicestershire & Rutland County FA have invited Nick Levett to come and explain these findings and detail of how and why changes to the game should and need to be made. The presentation will also provide more information on the time-scales they are going to be working to and why the research was originally commissioned. This will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions.
