Course Content: The course is run over 5 modules including the completion of 6 matches as a trainee referee, two of which should be observed by a mentor (if possible).
This course is classroom based and will be held over the following days:

There is also a requirement to complete a Safeguarding Children CD Rom (14 & 15 year olds), Safeguarding Children Workshop (16+) & FA CRB Check (18+). The cost of these will be covered by the Beds FA but the workshop needs to be booked separately and the CRB check arranged with one of our verifiers, ideally before the course takes place.
Module 1- Introduction
This module will introduce some key aspects in the following areas:
- Assessment of knowledge paper – Pre Course Study
- The role of the Referee
- Consider the skills required to control a game of football.
Module 2 - Laws of the Game & FA Safeguarding Children workshop
instruction of Laws of the Game and how to manage situations as a referee,
- Positioning & movement at both set pieces & in open play
- Managing game situations
- Signals & communication techniques
Module 3 - Examination
Both a multiple choice examination paper and a practical on field assessment are used to establish theory & practical knowledge.
1. Written element - both theoretical & practical courses
2. Theory DVD - used in mainly theory based courses
3. Practical on field assessment for use on practical based courses only.
Having passed the exams, you will be registered as a level 9 Trainee Referee and you then must go onto complete the following modules:
Module 4 - Refereeing
- 6 games are used to establish both the knowledge as well as the practicalities of refereeing.
- 2 of the games are ideally observed by a referee mentor (if available) who will then be able to offer immediate feedback and development points for future matches.
Module 5 - The Next Step
A 3 hour workshop designed to reflect on a trainee referees first experiences of refereeing and to offer development pointers.
Once having refereed six 11-a-side games and attended New Referee Workshop, you will become a fully qualified referee and be promoted to a level 8 or level 7 referee depending on your age.
