FA REFEREES’ COURSE INFORMATION
Overview
The FA Referees’ Course provides an introduction to officiating 11v11 and 9v9 football. The course will introduce learners to The Laws of Association Football and their application, delivered through theory and practical elements and focussing on the knowledge, skills and attributes required to operate safely and effectively in grass roots football.
Course Structure
Unit 1: Pre-course learning (2 hours)
Unit 2: On-course theory and practical (7 hours)
Unit 3: On-course theory and practical (3 hours)
Unit 4: On-course theory and practical (7 hours)
Unit 5: Referee five matches
Unit 6: On-course final assessment (2 hours)
Course Content
Through a mixture of theory and practical activity, learners will cover:
- Effective communication
- Positioning and movement
- Penalty kick and free kick management
- Managing re-starts
- Advantage
- Managing players
- Recognising and dealing with foul challenges
- Cautioning and sending-off procedure
- Offside
- Dealing with substitutions
- Dealing with injuries
Minimum Age
Learners must be 14 or over on the course start date.
Safeguarding Requirements
Before refereeing their five matches (unit 5), leaners must have complied with the FA’s safeguarding requirements.
Qualification
Upon successful completion of units 1-6, learners will be classified as either a Level Y referee (if aged 14 or 15) or a Level 7 referee (if aged 16 or over). The FA refereeing qualification is awarded only when all 6 units have been successfully completed.

JOINING INSTRUCTIONS FOR LEVEL 9 FOOTBALL REFEREES COURSE 26 – 30 JAN 15
General
1. You applied for and have now been selected to attend a Potential Level 9 Football Referees Course that will be held at Aldershot (full address below) on 26 –30 Jan 15.

Please note the FDC is next to the Army Rugby Stadium adjacent to the 3G Floodlit Football pitch.
2. All students are to report by 0900hrs on Mon 26 Jan at the FDC Aldershot. Attendance is expected until 1600hrs on Fri 30 Jan. A course programme will be provided nearer the time. There will be two evening modules during the course programme.
Administration
3. Accommodation - To book accommodation you are advised to contact Central Accommodation Bookings Services (CABS) on 01252 352154 or 01252 354305. There are no block bookings available within the Aldershot area.
4. Transport - Students are to make their own transport arrangements for the course through their unit MT. Authority for travel is in accordance with Travel at Public expense for Army Sport 2013DIN10-003.
5. Messing - All meals will be available for students in the relevant messes on PAYD basis.
6. Dress - Dress throughout the course will be clean sports clothing. For the practical match periods candidates should be in possession of boots/trainers and shin guards. Boots must not be worn inside the lecture room. Wet weather kit may be required throughout the week and warm weather clothing will be expected for some of the evening sessions.
7. Pay - Cash paid soldiers are to ensure that they have sufficient funds for the duration of the course. There are no facilities to pay cash paid soldiers during the course. Banking soldiers are advised that there are sufficient cash machines throughout the local area.
8. Course Cost – The course cost is £80.00 which includes your registration fee to the Army and English Football Associations for season 2014/15. In order to claim SLC, service personnel must have the course authorised by Army Education staff on MOD Form 1950 before they begin study. Upon completion of the course, MOD form 1950 must be presented to Unit Admin staff together with the payment receipt and attendance /qualification obtained certificate
9. Stationery - All students require a notebook and writing equipment. A black pen is required for the registration forms and examination.
10. Commanding Officers Details- Students are to ensure they have the correct details of thier Commanding Officer/Officer Commanding including: Rank, Name, Initials, post nominal letters and the correct postal address.
Course Outline
11. Students will be provided with a Laws of the Game rulebook. Please find a copy available on the link here
You are to ensure you read the rulebook before arrival. You will also be provided with an original copy of the Laws of the Game rulebook, a FA Basic Referees’ Course folder and various other items to assist with the course upon arrival.
12. The outline of the course will cover your responsibilities as referee and also include the following: Kit required, field of play inspections, pre-match administration, powers of a referee, application of law, misconduct report writing and a child awareness workshop. The course will be delivered both practically and class room based.
13. The course will culminate in practical assessments and a written exam. Students should be aware that Law of the Game theory is not covered in depth on this course as it is a practical course and revision will be required to be undertaken during the evenings and prior to the course.
14. You may be required to undertake eyesight and colour perception tests during the course. Candidates who normally wear spectacles should ensure they bring them along for these examinations.
Criminal Record Checks (CRC)/Child Protection.
15. It is a Football Association (FA) requirement that all Referees have a Criminal Records Check (CRC) which is administered by the FA. This is in line with Government Regulations and is a pre-requisite before registering as a qualified referee. 16. During the course you will also attend a Child Protection Workshop. If you have already attended this workshop with the FA then please bring the supporting documentation/evidence with you to the course.
