Course Information:
- Minimum Age: 14
- Course Duration: 24 hours plus 6 games
- Course Prerequisites: None
- Who is it for: Ideally suited to those wanting to become a referee involved in the 11 a side game both in Youth and Adult football.
- Course aims and objectives: This course will provide an introduction to the laws of the game as well as developing the practical skills required to be a football referee.
Course Content:
The course is run over 5 modules including the completion of 6 matches as a trainee referee, two of which should be observed by a referee coach.
The course can either be predominantly theory or practically based dependant on venue and can be run over a weekend or several sessions again depending on resources.
Module 1- Introduction
This module will introduce some key aspects in the following:
Laws of the Game
The role of the Referee
Consider the skills require to control a game of football.
Module 2- Practical Element
Practical elements of the course will provide an introduction to:
Warming up and cooling down activities
Positioning & movement at both set pieces & in open play
Managing game situations
Signals & communication techniques
FA Safeguarding Children workshop (included in the course programme)
Module 3 - Examination
Both a multiple choice examination paper and a practical on field assessment are used to establish theory & practical knowledge.
1. Written element - both theoretical & practical courses
2. Theory DVD - used in mainly theory based courses
3. Practical on field assessment for use on practical based courses.
Module 4 - Refereeing
6 games are used to establish both the knowledge as well as the practicalities of refereeing.
2 of the games are observed by a referee mentor who offers immediate feedback and development points.
Module 5 - The next Steps
A 3 hour workshop designed to reflect on a trainee referees first experiences of refereeing and to offer development pointers.
Re-assessment: Candidates can be re-examined within 1 month after completing the initial examination.
Refresher: Annual Referee and Training Development programme organised by County Football Associations for all new and existing referees.

Course Dates and Further Information
Modules 1,2 and 3 of this course start on a Thursday evening, continue over two full day weekend sessions (one Saturday and one Sunday) and finish on a Thursday evening as follows:
Thursday 4th November, 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm
Saturday 6th November, 9.00 am to 4.00 pm
Sunday 14th November, 9.00 am to 4.00 pm
Thursday 18th November, 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm
The venue is Kew Association Football Club in Richmond, Surrey. The football club has parking spaces available. Coming along the A307, Petersham Road, turn into Sandy Lane then go right into Ham Street and then left into Riverside Drive. The ground is 200 yards on the Right Hand side.
The nearest mainline railway stations are Richmond and Kingston which are both on the main line from Waterloo station. The club can be reached by bus from either of these stations.
From Richmond station take any of the following buses: H22 going to Hounslow Bell Corner, R68 towards Hampton Court, R70 The Avenue or 490 Hampton. Get off at Crown Road Richmond Road, Stop T. From Kingston station take Bus 65 towards Ealing Broadway to Petersham Fox and Duck Public House. The ground is a 15 minutes walk from the Bus Stop turning into Sandy Lane then going right into Ham Street and left into Riverside Drive.
The course includes practical outdoor demonstrations which will take place on the Club playing field.
The examinations will be held on the second Thursday. Once through the examinations candidates go on to Module 4 - completing their initial six 11-a-side matches. We arrange for each candidate to have a mentor at this stage - an experienced referee who can provide advice and support. There is no deadline within which the 6 matches have to be completed.
Once the 6 matches are completed candidates attend a module 5 session when they receive their certificates. Dates have not yet been set for module 5 meetings - they will be arranged as and when candidates are ready to receive their certificates as qualified level 7 or level 8 (under 16) referees.
